Building Blocks, 2020

Acrylic on Canvas

This piece is representative of our building blocks in times of crisis or when life is seeming most gray without happiness. The colors in the background symbolize our building blocks in life and what holds us up and keeps us steady. The woman depicted in the painting is painted with only the three primary colors; red, yellow and blue. These colors are all mixed together though and it is when she remembers who she is, her building blocks, that she is able to regain her confidence from what she has suffered and let a little color into her life. The inspiration for this painting came from a friend who has suffered sexual abuse in her past and still remains one of the most positive people I have ever met. Her happiness shines despite her trauma and she has told me that taking hold of who she is it what keeps her going every day.
